Marchant & Davina
Workshop Date: Saturday 16th May 2009
Time: 1.30pm - 4.30pm

Marchant Birch trained in Ballroom from the age of 7 up to competitive professional level in South Africa. He won many competitions in Ballroom and Street Dance during the 1980s. He also won the national Cape Jazz Championship 1999 in South Africa (Cape Jazz is a partner dance similar to salsa).
On taking up salsa he understood the need to learn the dance form from its authentic Latino roots and has trained with the worlds best Puerto Ricans, New Yoricans, and Cubans. He was invited to start teaching and performing salsa in 2001.
Over the subsequent years he has won ‘The Best British Newcomer Award’ – British Congress 2003, ‘Best UK Dance Act’ – UK International Salsa Congress 2006, and was given a Special Award of Recognition for his contribution to salsa and for raising standard of teaching in UK– UK International Salsa Congress 2007.
He has taught and performed all around the UK, Europe and as far afield as Brazil. He has represented the UK 6 years running at the UK International Salsa Congress. He is also the 1st and only representative of South Africa in the salsa community.
In his years in salsa he has taken his teachings from the latinos, and blended it with ballroom technique, jazz and afro movement, developing a smooth, elegant style of salsa and mambo known as the Alchemy Way. This is presented on his first instructional DVD, released May 2007.
Davina holds ISTD teaching qualifications in Modern Theatre Dance and Tap. She trained in Modern, Jazz, Tap and Ballet from the age of 3, taking Modern and Tap to advanced status.
For 10 years she has taught in a variety of capacities, mainly freelance teaching at dance schools and colleges around London. She taught and entered many students for dance examinations, and choreographed for numerous showcases, productions, and competitions. Davina was Head of Dance at a community youth theatre in London and taught the dance aspect of GCSE performing arts in secondary education.
Further qualifications include a BA Honours degree in Drama & Theatre Studies, various fitness teaching certificates including an S/NVQ in Exercise to music. She is now the performance and
teaching partner of Marchant, featured on his instructional DVD, and the female exponent of the Alchemy way of dancing salsa and mambo.
The combination of Davina's training and experience has given her a passion for teaching, with an infectious enthusiasm which is passed on to her students. Her approach to ladies styling is to encourage her students to allow freedom of expression, which is ultimately what dance is. She provides the tools to express through a variety of take-home exercises using body movement, arm styling and musical appreciation. Davina's style is smooth, sophisticated and sexy! She teaches how to style working with the natural flow of partnerwork, which allows following and styling to be felt rather than thought.
Marchant and Davina together formed Alchemy Dance Company in 2005. They took both their past dance experience and combined the techniques and methods for the performance company. Originally a team of four, they have performed nationwide at many events and salsa congresses.
In 2006 they launched Alchemy Dance Academy, giving the salsa public the opportunity to benefit from the techniques developed in the dance company. For the past 2 years they have run the Academy by way of intensive courses and workshops at different venues around the south. In March 2008 the Academy launched its permanent residence in Basingstoke, Hampshire.
